Nocona, named for the wise and valiant Comanche warrior, Chief Peta Nocona, has a long history of American Indian civilizations including Spanish Fort along the Red River. As the longhorn cattle were herded along the Chisholm Trail, they passed through Nocona for crossing into Oklahoma. Supplying the cowboys with necessary goods like boots, belts, and other leather goods spawned Nocona’;s reputation as the “leather goods center of the southwest.” The leather heritage remains with the Montague Boot Company and Nocona Athletic Goods.
