Bass Performance Hall

The Bass Performance Hall was named “one of the top 10 opera houses in the world” by Travel + Leisure. The crown jewel of downtown Fort Worth is named after Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass. This acclaimed, multi-purpose facility is the permanent home of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Texas Ballet Theater, the Fort Worth Opera, the Cliburn Concerts, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, as well as special presentations by Casa Mañana. Marty Leonard Community Chapel – Lena Pope Home

The world-famous E. Fay Jones described his Chapel design as an instrument for nature to play its music, and, by the way, the light and shadows move and change, he had turned it so that the music changes throughout the day and year. Farmers Branch Historical Park

The Historical Park is nestled within 22 acres that trace the proud heritage of Farmers Branch, from the 1840s through the 1940s. The Gilbert House, built between 1856-1857, is the oldest rock structure in Dallas County still on its original foundation. Other local historic structures on the grounds include the 1937 Dodson House, home of the first Mayor of Farmers Branch; a one-room school that was once part of the Farmers Branch school from 1900-1915; and the original Farmers Branch railroad depot, built in 1877. Also features other structures from outside of Farmers Branch which has been moved to the park for preservation.

Nasher Sculpture Center

Nasher Sculpture Center is home to one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary sculpture in the world. The Center is located on a 2.4-acre site adjacent to the Dallas Museum of Art in the heart of the Dallas Arts District. Renzo Piano, a world-renowned architect and winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1998, is the architect of the Center’s 55,000 square foot building. Piano worked in collaboration with landscape architect Peter Walker on the design of the 1.4acre Garden.

Tarrant County Courthouse

This is one of the architectural masterpieces of the city. It serves as the terminus of Main Street and it sits high on the bluff of the Trinity River. It was designed by Gunn and Curtiss Architects of Kansas City and it is a striking example of American Beaux-Arts Design. Probst & Co. from Chicago was the General Contractor. It was modeled after the Texas Capitol Building in Austin and uses pink granite. It was one of the first structural steel framed buildings built in the Southwestern United States. The courthouse is 194 feet in height.

Built in 1891, the Romanesque Revival design of MA Orlopp, is made of Pecos Red Sandstone and blue granite. This courthouse is well known as “Old Red” and currently houses the Dallas Visitors Information Center and the Old Red Museum of Dallas History.

Kalita Humphreys Theater

Home to the Dallas Theatre Center, Kalita Humphreys is the only theater in the U.S. designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The monolithic concrete building was a combination of curved and angular forms typical of Wright’s late-period public projects. The vertical cylindrical forms of the four-and-a-half story building, encircled by horizontal cantilevered decks, presented a sculptural façade, both monumental and dynamic, within a wooded park setting. The entire building was based on a 60/120-degree equilateral parallelogram, such that there were no right angles. The unit-system organized not only the floor plan but also many of the details from the smallest design of the window shapes to the facetted columns and the built-in furniture.

Amon Carter Museum

The Amon Carter Museum was established through the generosity of Amon G. Carter Sr. (1879 – 1955), to house his collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell; to collect, preserve, and exhibit the finest examples of American art; and to serve an educational role through exhibitions, publications, and programs devoted to the study of American art.

Designed by renowned and award-winning architect, Philip Johnson, the museum’s original architect, he also designed and completed the building’s most recent expansion in 2001.

Fort Worth Water Gardens

The Water Gardens were designed by noted New York architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee and was dedicated to the City of Fort Worth by the Amon G. Carter Foundation. The park is frequently billed as a “cooling oasis in the concrete jungle” of downtown. Its focal points are three pools of water; the quiet meditation pool, the aerating pool which features multiple fountains and the active pool which has water cascading 38 feet (11 meters) down terraces and steps into a small pool at the bottom. It also has over 500 species of plants and trees throughout the park. Part of the film Logan’s Run was filmed in the active pool at the Water Gardens in 1976.

Thanks-Giving Square

The area was designed by famed architect Philip Johnson and was completed in 1976. The most prominent and recognizable feature of Thanks-Giving Square is the Chapel of Thanksgiving, a small, spiral tower that features an enclave for prayerful thanks. The entrance to the chapel is at the end of a 125-foot (38 m) bridge that runs over a cascading waterfall.

Inside the chapel, the spiral is topped with stained glass windows, leaving a flood of color when looking up in the chapel. Collectively, the stained glass, which was designed by Gabriel Loire of Chartres, France is called the Glory Window. It was designed to feature brighter colors as the spiral reached its apex, becoming brighter and brighter as it reached the center.

Nasher Sculpture Center

Open since October 2003, the Nasher Sculpture Center is home to one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary sculpture in the world. The Center is located on a 2.4 acre site adjacent to the Dallas Museum of Art in the heart of the Dallas Arts District. The museum was a longtime dream of the late Raymond and Patsy Nasher, who together formed a comprehensive collection of masterpieces by Calder, de Kooning, di Suvero, Giacometti, Hepworth, Kelly, Matisse, Miró, Moore, Picasso, Rodin, and Serra, among others.

Renzo Piano, a world-renowned architect and winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1998, is the architect of the Center’s 55,000 square foot building. Piano worked in collaboration with landscape architect Peter Walker on the design of the 1.4acre Garden. On display in the Galleries and Garden are rotating exhibitions of works from the Nasher Collection as well as special exhibitions drawn from other museums and private collections. In addition to indoor and outdoor gallery spaces, the Center contains an auditorium, education and research facilities, a cafe, and a store.

Popular monthly events include Target First Saturdays for children and families, Saturday Night in the City featuring al fresco dining and twilight strolls, and the NasherSalon series which welcomes distinguished speakers for an evening of discourse on art, architecture, and other cultural topics of interest.

Tours of Puddin Hill

The Puddin Hill Store is a unique place. Shelves are stocked with Mary of Puddin Hill Pecan Fruit Cake, the confection derived from an old family recipe by Mary and Sam Lauderdale more than 45 years ago. Mary Horton’s original recipe has never been changed. The cakes are still made with an abundance of nuts (they make pecan, apricot and walnut varieties), cherries, pineapple and dates with just enough batter to hold it all together. There are no spices or citron, and no preservatives or additives.

During the Fall months, things really get busy at Mary of Puddin Hill, and that’s the best time to see first-hand just how those delicious cakes and candies are made. In October, November and December, Puddin Hill offers daily tours of the bakery, candy kitchen and mail order departments. Famous Mineral Water Company

In the late 19th century, Texas was well known for its mineral water resorts. It was during this time of mineral water hysteria that the waters of Mineral Wells were discovered and the town formed its identity. Now celebrating over 100 years of service to the area, loyal patrons continue to purchase bottles of the original mineral, deep well mineral and reverse osmosis waters. Some customers bring their own containers and have them filled inside the original Famous Pavilion.

Farmers Branch Historical Park

The Historical Park is nestled within 22 acres that trace the proud heritage of Farmers Branch, from the 1840s through the 1940s. The Gilbert House, built between 1856-1857, is the oldest rock structure in Dallas County still on its original foundation. Other local historic structures on the grounds include the 1937 Dodson House, home of the first Mayor of Farmers Branch; a one-room school that was once part of the Farmers Branch school from 1900-1915; and the original Farmers Branch railroad depot, built in 1877. It also features other structures from outside of Farmers Branch which have been moved to the park for preservation.

Fort Worth Water Gardens

The Water Gardens were designed by noted New York architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee and was dedicated to the City of Fort Worth by the Amon G. Carter Foundation. The park is frequently billed as a “cooling oasis in the concrete jungle” of downtown. Its focal points are three pools of water; the quiet meditation pool, the aerating pool which feature multiple fountains and the active pool which has water cascading 38 feet (11 meters) down terraces and steps into a small pool at the bottom. It also has over 500 species of plants and trees throughout the park.

Part of the film Logan’s Run was filmed in the active pool at the Water Gardens in 1976.

The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary

The Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary is a natural science education center, uniquely set and preserved in McKinney, Texas. With a 289-acre wildlife sanctuary, four miles of hiking trails, a two-acre native plant garden, live animals, indoor and outdoor exhibits as well as classrooms and laboratories, The Heard welcomes over 60,000 visitors annually. The Heard is dedicated to demonstrating, by example, the extraordinary importance of protecting the environment and natural habitats.

Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

The Dallas Arboretum is nestled on the southeast shore of White Rock Lake in East Dallas. Home of the Southwest’s largest outdoor spring floral festival, Dallas Blooms, the Arboretum is a nationally recognized display garden featuring fabulous floral color in beds throughout the year.

Located on 66-acres on the historic Everette DeGolyer and Alex Camp estates, just minutes from downtown Dallas, the Dallas Arboretum is truly an urban oasis. Over the course of the year, the Arboretum will attract between 325,000 and 350,000 visitors to its finely manicured grounds. Whether visitors come for a weekly respite or from locations around the country, and often around the world, they will find the garden areas listed below resplendent with seasonal color. The Arboretum is a popular bridal photography spot and about 300 weddings are held in the Garden each year.

The Dallas Arboretum is known for two major annual festivals:

Dallas Blooms- This 6-week festival from early March until mid-April is the largest outdoor floral festival in the Southwest. The showcase of this event is over 400,000 spring-blooming bulbs; including tulips, as well as daffodils, Dutch Iris and hyacinth, flowering in symphony with over 100,000 pansies, violas and poppies and thousands of other spring-blooming annuals and perennials. The finale of this celebration of spring is the mass flowering of our collection of over 3,000 azaleas. May Flower- Starting on May 1st the Dallas Arboretum completely changes out the color beds of the garden with over 80,000 spring-blooming annuals in full color.

Autumn at the Arboretum- The Dallas Arboretum is a rich tapestry of color for this tribute to fall. For six weeks the already lush plantings of over 150,000 summer flowers in full bloom is complemented by an additional planting of 6,000 chrysanthemums and thousands of other fall annuals. The centerpiece of this festival is the “Pumpkin Patch” filled with over 20,000 pumpkins and the striking “Pumpkin House”. This 15-ft. tall house is completely covered in over 200 pumpkins, and surrounded by a garden of over 40 varieties of pumpkins and gourds.

Cedar Hill State Park

Cedar Hill State Park is a 1,826-acre urban nature preserve located on the 7500 acres Joe Pool Reservoir. The Park’s proximity to major metropolitan cities makes it an ideal destination for families who want to enjoy the great outdoors without spending precious time driving. The ruggedness and scenic beauty of the area combined with over 100 miles of shoreline and water-based recreation such as boating and fishing as well as camping, mountain biking, bird watching, and picnicking.

Also located at the park is Penn Farm Agricultural History Center that pays tribute to the disappearing Texas’ family farm and affords a glimpse into agrarian history as farm machinery took the place of the horse and mule almost a century ago. The Farm is open 7 days a week to self-guided tours. There are reconstructed and historic buildings from the mid-1800s through the mid-1900s. The Penn Farm has a very relaxing atmosphere and is perfect for family walks. Self-guided and guided tours are available.

Paul Mathews Nature Preserve

Paul Mathews Prairie is a 100-acre rare remnant of unplowed Texas Blackland Prairie, part of the once vast (12 million acres) Texas Blackland Prairie, it’ a little piece of wild America. Through an agreement with the Texas Nature Conservancy, it will remain that way. Today the tallgrass prairie is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. Only a few postage-stamp-size refuges remain.

The grasses and wildflowers that greeted early settlers still wave in the summer breezes. Native birds still feed on the seed-bearing grasses whose roots are anchored as much as 100 feet deep in the fertile Blackland soil. Birders and wildflower enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the meadow. In fact, the sea of big bluestem and Indian grass waving in the wind is a treat for everyone.

To visit Mathews Prairie go 4.5 miles west from the intersection of US 69 and US 380 at SH 224 (west Lee St.). Turn north on FM 903, go 2.1 miles then turn west on CR 1116. Continue for 1.8 miles. A sign at the NE corner of CR 1119 and CR 1116 identifies the preserve. Parking is along the county roads.

The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, which pays tribute to 58 of the top cowboys and cowgirls in Texas. The museum is located in Barn A, in what was once the horse and mule barns in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards.

The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame honors Texas men and women who have excelled in the sports of rodeo and cutting. Also included are the Sterquell Wagon Collection and the John Justin Trail of Fame. The Sterquell is billed as “the world’s largest lifestyle wagon collection” and features more than 60 antique wagons, carriages and sleighs. Dinosaur Valley State Park

Dinosaur Valley State Park, located just northwest of Glen Rose in Somervell County, is a 1524.72-acre, scenic park set astride the Paluxy River. The land for the park was acquired from private owners under the State Parks Bonds Program during 1968 and opened to the public in 1972.

Eastward-dipping limestones, sandstones, and mudstones, deposited from approximately 113 million years ago along the shorelines of an ancient sea, form the geological setting for the park area. Over the last million years or so, these layered formations have been dissected and sculpted by the Paluxy River which, in many places, has cut down to resistant beds and planed off sizable exposures of rock in the river bottom.

Grapevine Vintage Railroad

The Grapevine Vintage Railroad travels along the historic Cotton Belt Route between Grapevine and the Fort Worth Stockyards. The Railroad is serviced by two vintage locomotives which include “Puffy” the 1896 Steam locomotive and oldest continuously operating steam engine in the South, and a 1953 GP-7 diesel locomotive. Legends of the Game Baseball Museum & Children’s Learning Center

An exciting, interactive, and educational glimpse into America’s pastime! Located in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Legends of the Game offers visitors the chance to experience the game of baseball on an entirely different level. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor

If you fancy a break from some culture, why not let your hair down and have a good splash around at the Six Flags water park! It’s the largest waterpark in the southwest, located in Arlington which is a short drive outside the Dallas area, and with rides with names like The Sea Wolf and Kamikaze, it gives some indication of the excitement of the rides!

There are quieter alternatives to those who are less adventurous, with lazy rivers to float around and wave pools, and the park is split into thrill rides, family rides, and kid’s rides. The park is shut throughout the winter months so it’s really only a summer excursion, but it’s a great way to cool down in the heat!

There is also a wide variety of food and snack vendors throughout the park area, and admission costs $27.99 for adults and $21.99 for juniors – its not cheap so make sure you plan a whole day there to make it worthwhile.

Frontiers of Flight Museum

Founded in 1988 and situated southeast of Love Field, this fun museum is great if you are traveling with children (or are just interested in cool things that fly!). Featuring many life-size airplanes, helicopters, and varying displays, there is something for everyone to enjoy as well as several spacecraft, one of which being the Apollo 7 command module!

Open 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday, tickets cost $8 for adults, and kids under 3 get in free. You also have the option to take a guided tour or explore at your leisure. Investigate the pioneers of flight and see how Dallas featured in the aviation tale of the first people to take to the skies.

The ‘Lighter than Air’ collection features the giant hydrogen-filled airships which used to travel across the Atlantic such as the Hindenburg. The museum store offers cool and unique gifts to take home.

Dallas Zoo

For an alternative day out why not visit Dallas zoo! Home to around 8,000 animals, the zoo is open every day from 9 am to 4 pm. The zoo features a large variety of different wildlife and the ‘Wilds of Africa’ exhibit is definitely worth checking out.

Admission is not too expensive at $12 for adult entrance tickets and for children aged 3-11 a ticket costs $9. Check out the ‘Giants of the Savannah’ exhibit where giant feeding platforms mean you can actually feed the giraffes which children will absolutely love.

Getting the monorail around the zoo is a great idea if little feet are tired – this costs $3 a ticket but is worthwhile as the zoo covers over 106 acres and it is the largest zoo in the state of Texas! Make sure you check out the huge giant giraffe sculpture as you enter the park – not that you can miss it at 67ft tall!

Nasher Sculpture Center

This cultural center is located in the urban center of Dallas and houses an important collection of more than 300 modern and contemporary sculptures which was acquired by the late Raymond and Patsy Nasher.

It features the works of amazing artists such as Joan Miro, Jeff Koons, and Anish Kapoor and if you are a fan of sculpture or art, this really is a great place to spend some time. The inside exhibits are displayed in an Italian travertine stone building with a glass roof which gives the impression of the open sky, and the outside space houses further sculptures in a garden-like setting with beautiful fountains and more than 170 trees.

This gives the impression of an oasis of calm in the city and is a lovely place to wander around. The Centre is open from 11 am to 5 pm from Tuesday to Sunday, and houses a shop and a café.

Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park

Nestled in 13 wooded acres just south of downtown Dallas, Dallas Heritage Village provides visitors, both young & young at heart, a unique museum experience. The Village is a living history museum, portraying life in North Texas from 1840-1910 with permanent and temporary exhibits throughout 38 historic structures. Farmers Branch Historical Park

The Historical Park is nestled within 22 acres that trace the proud heritage of Farmers Branch, from the 1840s through the 1940s. The Gilbert House, built between 1856-1857, is the oldest rock structure in Dallas County still on its original foundation. Other local historic structures on the grounds include the 1937 Dodson House, home of the first Mayor of Farmers Branch; a one-room school that was once part of the Farmers Branch school from 1900-1915; and the original Farmers Branch railroad depot, built in 1877. It also features other structures from outside of Farmers Branch which has been moved to the park for preservation.
